The Great Commission

This morning I woke up at 6am, I immediately checked my phone to assure myself Hagan had made it to football practice safely and then I attempted to go back to bed. That’s when God spoke clearly “remember that statistic you heard yesterday on the radio?” Then almost immediately “go write”.

Words are kind of my thing (and especially God’s Word). Although not a song writer like my very talented brother-in-law, God very clearly told me to share some important words with you all.

Okay, so what did I hear yesterday? As I was driving, (usually listening to country music or Christian radio) I had one of the Christian stations on and the DJs were talking about how the majority of Christians do not know what the Great Commission is. I apologize, I do not recall the exact stat mentioned, but it was large. I was both stunned, and then not so stunned, sadly.

My summarized version: “Go, and make disciples of all nations so that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord” (combo of God’s word in Matthew 28 and Philippians 2)

God’s Word: Jesus is speaking to His disciples “Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen

You see God is speaking to us, us who believe, who call ourselves “Christians”, “believers in Christ”, “Jesus freaks”, “Christ followers”. If we define ourselves in this way, we are His disciples and we have been given the command to disciple others. “Go and make disciples”, what does that mean to you? What does it look like? Are you being faithful to the call?

When I became a Christian, I was 16 years old. God faithfully placed people in my life to disciple me. Going does not always look like uprooting everything and giving away all your possessions- although, sometimes that is the call. For me personally, going has meant being willing to meet with others (face to face) for connection and deep conversation, to share the Good News and dig into God’s word together through Bible Study or Scripture memory. It has also meant to be willing to hear some difficult questions, and if I don’t have the answers (which happens often), we figure those out together or we seek wiser counsel together.

My hearts desire is that in the end, when God calls me home, He will say “well done, good and faithful servant” (Matthew 25:23). I pray that these times of fellowship over the years will always be glorifying to Him. I hope that these words have blessed you and encouraged you, my brothers and sisters in Christ to go and make disciples in a world that desperately needs the Lord.
